History

The Institute was founded on June 26, 1990, on the basis of Molecular Genetic Problems Department of Vavilov Institute of General Genetics and the Laboratory of Nucleic Acid Biosynthesis of Engelhardt Institute of Molecular Biology. IGB is a structural unit of the Russian Academy of Sciences and is affiliated with the Division of Biological Sciences, which is responsible for methodological and administrative management of IGB RAS. Academician Georgi Georgiev, one of the most famous Soviet and Russian biochemists and molecular biologists, was appointed and then elected organizing director of IGB RAS. Over the years, IGG RAS has become the leading Russian research center in the field of molecular and cellular biology. The Institute includes 23 research departments: 15 laboratories and 7 research groups.
